Welcoming our new STEM Ambassadors

Catalyst manages the STEM Ambassadors programme for Wiltshire and Swindon. STEM Ambassadors have experience of working and studying in science, technology, engineering and maths. They volunteer their time free of charge to work with young people in schools and colleges - from primary to post 16.

There are currently 240 STEM Ambassadors in the Wiltshire and Swindon area. We are delighted to welcome 25 new Ambassadors on board. They have all recently gone through their inductions and have been CRB checked.

In the south of our region, we have a scientist working on decontamination, a psychologist, a geneticist, a physicist, a self-employed consultant with a computing and engineering background and a Head Brewer.

In the north of our region, we have seven new Engineers:

  • one working in the Army on major armoured vehicles
  • one from National Instruments with expertise in test measurement
  • a structural engineer working in rail and highways
  • a pharmaceutical design engineer working for Foster Wheeler and
  • from RWE npower, a mechanical engineer, a wind energy expert and a structural dynamics computer modelling expert.

In the sciences we have:

  • two pharmacists working in the pharmaceutical industry
  • a physicist studying the physics of snow at the University of Reading
  • an NHS pathologist/histologist
  • an environmental scientist and
  • an expert in astronomy and geosciences.

In Maths, we have a pricing analyst from the automotive sector working at Tyco Electronics and a mathematician now working as a Research and Development Engineer in the semiconductor industry. However, many of our other Ambassadors also use maths in the careers and are happy to talk about that aspect of their work.

In IT, we are pleased to welcome one of Microsoft's Chief Evangelists, specialising in new media and a Development Analyst working for BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

If you would like more information or are interested in booking a STEM Ambassador to get involved in your school, see our website where you will find case studies and a request form. We need at least four weeks' notice.
